Dissociative Identity Disorder

Dissociative Identity Disorder

Dissociative Identity Disorder is a psychological disorder characterized by at least two distinct and relatively enduring identities or dissociated personality states. In this project, I have metaphorically personified the illustrated objects to depict what goes on with someone with this disorder, though very indirectly.

The GIF starts with multiple eyes which come into the forefront one by one or simultaneously and eventually go into oblivion - just like what happens with an individual suffering from DID. The yin-and-yang describes how opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent on each other; each aspect containing a part of the other aspect. Similarly, the identities that the individual dissociates into - which may be completely different and contrary to each other -  still contain a flavour of each other, as well as the host personality. The dandelion too, is used metaphorically to depict the way the individual dissociates into their distinct identities with the slightest blow -anything they feel triggered with. The dandelion is a flower, whose flower heads disperse in the wind, fragment by fragment, even with the slightest change of wind. Associating this instability of the flower with the individual suffering from DID, who, with the slightest change of situations, fragments into their different identities.
Last, just like a parasitic plant derives nutrition from it's host plant and deprives it from its nutrients and causes its deterioration, similarly the different identities that the person splits into cause the host personality’s deterioration.  It is as if those various identities are feeding off the host personality, causing a havoc.
